The two clubs met in the 1999 Champions League final at Camp Nou in Barcelona. Mario Basler gave FC Bayern Munich the lead after six minutes, but Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskjær scored in stoppage time and Manchester United won 2–1. The win completed the club's treble that season.

In 1968, Manchester United became the first English team to win the European Cup. The club has played its home matches at Old Trafford since 1910.
