The two clubs met in the group stage of the Europa League in 2015–16. Napoli won 5–0 at home in Naples and 1–0 in Bruges.

Napoli were founded in 1926 and play in Serie A. The club's most famous years came with Diego Armando Maradona, who led Napoli to their first two Serie A titles, in 1987 and 1990. The stadium was called Stadio San Paolo until it was renamed in Maradona's honour.
