Liverpool Football Club was founded in 1892, following a dispute between Everton Football Club and the owners of the Anfield ground. The club joined the Football League shortly after its formation and grew into one of the most successful teams in English football.

The 1970s and 1980s brought sustained domestic and European success. Across that period Liverpool won multiple league titles and European Cups, and built a reputation in international club football that has outlasted the era itself.

In 2005 the club won the UEFA Champions League final in Istanbul, recovering from a three-goal deficit against AC Milan in a match widely regarded as one of the most notable finals in European competition.

Bill Shankly, who reshaped the club through the 1960s, remains its most influential manager, and Kenny Dalglish and Steven Gerrard are among the players most closely tied to its history. Liverpool has played its home matches at Anfield since it was formed, and the club's identity is bound up with the city itself.
