The clubs first met in the semi-finals of the European Cup in 1965. Liverpool won 3–1 at Anfield, Inter Milan won 3–0 at San Siro, went through 4–3 on aggregate and went on to win the final. In the Champions League, Liverpool went through in the round of 16 in 2008 and again in 2022, and won 1–0 at San Siro in the league phase of 2025–26.

Inter Milan have won Serie A 21 times and the European Cup three times. In 2009-10 the club won Serie A, the Coppa Italia and the Champions League in the same season, the first Italian club to do so. San Siro, officially the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, is shared with AC Milan.
