About Manchester City

Manchester City Football Club was founded in 1880 as St. Mark's (West Gorton), later becoming Ardwick Association Football Club, and took the Manchester City name in 1894. It joined the Football League in the late nineteenth century and has spent most of its history in the top tiers of English football.

The club's first major trophy came early, with the FA Cup in 1904.

Through the later twentieth century City moved between divisions before returning to the top flight. In the Premier League era the club has built sustained domestic success and a substantial presence in European competition, winning the UEFA Champions League for the first time in 2023.

Pep Guardiola managed the club from 2016 to 2026 and remains the most successful manager in its history. Among the players, Sergio Agüero is inseparable from the goal that took the title in the closing moments of the 2011–12 season.
